Born in Basel, Switzerland, Heyden studied at the School of Arts in Zürich, where she built a strong foundation in color theory. She and her husband lived in many places, but considered Durham, NC home. It was here that Heyden would wander along the Eno River, finding inspiration in the sounds of the water and woods that she would translate into the flowing colors of her tapestries.
