Born in Albany, New York, Walter Palmer studied with Frederick Church in Hudson, New York and later with Carolus-Duran in Paris. Palmer won the National Academy's Julius Hallgarten Prize for a winter landscape, titled January, in 1887. Following this success, Palmer concentrated on winter snow scenes for which he is best known.

Craquelure; small paint flake in lower right corner; slight buckling to canvas in top right and left corners; areas of re-touch to center of composition visible under UV light; light surface grime and slight yellowing to varnish in areas; minor rubbing to frame.
