Ming dynasty (1368-1644), the Bodhisattva of Compassion is shown here seated in dhyanasana with hands together in lap, wearing layered robes with edges elegantly rendered, serene expression, and a cowl that drapes over a high topknot, a hollow chamber in the back of the sculpture contains faded orange and golden silk, the wooden cover to the chamber has an inscription.

Areas of loss to lacquer and to wood, especially at lower left corner of drapery, chest, and neck; cracking and some flaking to lacquer; long vertical stress crack to back.
