New Hampshire Federal Mahogany Carved Shield Back Side Chair

Portsmouth, circa 1810, shaped crestrail and stiles with scratch beaded interior and exterior edge, pierced and carved distinctive backsplat, bowfront over upholstered (later) seat with decorative brass tack trim, front square tapered molded legs, on stretcher base, downswept rear legs.

Later upholstery was done by Richard Waters, a retired Colonial Williamsburg restoration specialist, who works in conjunction with Guenther Wood Group.

Later upholstery; shrinkage cracks at upper backsplat; center stretcher reset; chipping and wear at lower legs; small one-inch corner cut and patch at front left leg; overall good estate condition.
