Both octavo, hand-carried to Dr. Francis Marion Robertson, Augusta, Georgia, reading in full as follows: the first, one page, New Orleans February 10, 1844: "Gentlemen, I have received your letter in duplicate, requesting me to visit Augusta, on my way to Carolina. I accept, with pleasure, the invitation, and hope to pass a few days in Augusta. I am very thankful, Gentlemen, for the compliment of a public dinner, which you have done me the honor to tender; but, as I am most anxious that my journey should not assume any political or party character, I hope I shall be excused for declining, respectfully, to accept it, and for saying that I shall be glad to meet such of my fellow Citizens of Augusta as may have any inclination to see me, in a less formal or ceremonious way. I am, with great respect, Your friend & ob. Serv. H. Clay"; the second, one page with address panel, Shady Grove, near Columbus, Georgia, March 10, 1844, as follows: "I am greatly obliged by the receipt of your friendly letter of the 24th. Also, after a full consideration of my route through Georgia; I have determined on the following. I enter Columbus tomorrow, and leave it on Thursday morning for Barnesville, which I hope to reach Friday night. I go by the cars next day and desire to arrive at Macon by or before 4 O Clock in the afternoon. I depart from it Friday the 19th for Milledgeville, and upon Wednesday afternoon to the depot at Gordon Thursday the 21st. I go by the cars to Savannah, and leave it on Monday the 25th for Augusta, arriving at the eighty mile station at such hours as the Cars can put me down. I hope to reach Augusta that night or Tuesday morning the 26th according top the conveyance which I may be able to obtain. I reserve for my arrival at Augusta determining whether I can execute or must abandon my wish to reach Madison and Greensborough. If I go to those places, I shall have to embrace the opportunity of conveyance which the Rail Road leading to them from Augusta may afford. Until I have the pleasure of presenting in person my respects to you, I tender assurances of the great regard of Your friend & ob. Servant H. Clay."
