Jacko Vassilev, a native Bulgarian, dreamed of escaping the communist regime in his home country from an early age, but when he attempted to escape was detained in a slave labor camp for a year. Vassilev finally escaped after the regime fell and came to the United States, which he calls home. These aspects of Vassilev's life are on clear display in his photography, as he aims to capture humanity, joy and hardship, providing glimpses into the rich lives of his subjects.

Vassilev's work has been published, collected, and exhibited extensively throughout the world by institutions such as the International Center of Photography, New York; The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the European Center of Photography, Paris; and others.
