Richard Fennell is a North Carolina painter best known for his richly colored landscapes, still lifes, interiors, and portraits. He received his BFA from East Carolina University and his MFA from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where his studies in both painting and sculpture helped shape his interest in the relationship between form, space, and color. Over a career spanning more than five decades, Fennell has become particularly associated with the North Carolina landscape, finding subjects in the Piedmont, coastal marshes, and mountains of the state.

Working primarily in oil and pastel, Fennell combines close observation of nature with an expressive use of color and brushwork, exploring the effects of light, season, and time of day on the landscape. His work has been exhibited widely in North Carolina and is represented in public and private collections, including the North Carolina Museum of Art and the Weatherspoon Art Museum. In 2017, GreenHill Center for NC Art in Greensboro presented The Edge of Perception: Richard Fennell Retrospective, surveying approximately fifty years of his work and tracing his development from early sculpture, still life, and portraiture to the luminous landscapes for which he is especially recognized.
