Frederick Warren Freer was an American painter, illustrator, and educator known for his portraits, figurative works, and atmospheric landscapes. Born in Chicago, he studied with artist Henry Chapman Ford before continuing his training at the Royal Academy in Munich, where he was influenced by the rich tonal qualities and accomplished draftsmanship of the Munich School. After returning to the United States, Freer established himself as a successful painter and illustrator, working in both Chicago and New York.

Freer exhibited widely and was closely associated with Chicago's developing artistic community. He was a founding member of the Society of American Artists and exhibited at the National Academy of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Art Institute of Chicago. His paintings, often distinguished by subdued color, refined handling, and an interest in mood and atmosphere, are held in public collections including the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago.
