Henry François Farny (1847–1916) was a French-born American painter and illustrator best known for his carefully observed depictions of Native American life in the American West. Born in Alsace, Farny immigrated with his family to Pennsylvania as a child, where early encounters with members of the Seneca fostered a lifelong interest in Native American cultures. After settling in Cincinnati, he trained as a lithographer before studying at the Royal Academy in Düsseldorf, where he worked alongside fellow American artists Frank Duveneck and John Henry Twachtman. He later enjoyed a successful career as an illustrator for Harper’s Weekly, Century, and other publications.
