Finest Wine
This time of year, as I’m thinking about bottles to add to our retail shelves, I’m mostly leaning towards light, easy-drinking, and affordable. ‘Tis the season for pink wine and lightly chilled reds, after all. But then, occasionally, I’ll get an email in my inbox making me an offer I simply can’t refuse… A Godfather reference is fitting, in this case, because I’m talking about the boss of all Italian wines - the 2019 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Riserva ‘Monfortino’ ($925). It doesn’t get much more serious or legendary than ‘Monfortino,’ a label only made in the best vintages and snapped up quickly by serious collectors all over the world. With a pricepoint over $900, this bottle is clearly an investment, but it is an investment that comes with the gravitas and unmatched reputation of the Conterno name. When it comes to Italian wine, Barolo is inarguably the most famous and well-respected region. And within Barolo, few producers have built up as epic a reputation as Giacomo Conterno and his son Roberto.
The 2019 ‘Monfortino’ has already received stellar reviews across the board, including 100 points from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, where Monica Larner wrote: “It's been a while, alas. The last vintage of this legendary wine was 2015. Skipping forward to a year of natural richness and concentration, the Giacomo Conterno 2019 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is a magnificently executed wine. It carefully reins in the soaring power of Nebbiolo and whittles it down to extreme finesse and precision. This is the essence of the grape with no extra bells or whistles.”
This is the type of bottle that’s destined to be the crown jewel of your collection. It has massive aging potential, still tightly wound and eager for ten, twenty, or even thirty more years in your cellar, but the end result is certain to be worth the patience. We have two bottles in stock - don’t hesitate to reach out today to make one of them yours!
