Frank Gehry (Canada, b.1929), Powerplay Chair
Modernist design was never meant to fade into the background. Modernist pieces were existential reasoning in furniture form, a material reimagining of man's relationship to his environment. Frank Gehry, Marcel Breuer, Saarinen, Wegner, Mies van der Rohe, and others: these were the manufacturing philosophers of the post-WWII era, and their designs were intended to force a reckoning. In our October Modern Art & Design Session we offered a strong selection of pieces by these iconic designers. In aggregate, the collection drove home the strong aesthetic statement of the Modernist period.
