Mid 19th century, carved from a dense hardwood, probably ebony, carved into a lobed paneled form, the lid attractively inlaid with agate, mother-of-pearl, red aventurine, and jade to create floral and avian vignettes.

Two inch shrinkage cracks to wood; 8 in. shrinkage crack running diameter of base; inlay appears intact.
