Sancai Glazed Figure of a Lokapala
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Tang Dynasty (618-907), the tomb guardian depicted standing atop a recumbent ox, his right hand raised to hold a now missing weapon, his face unglazed with well molded and painted fierce expression, dressed in elaborate armor and tunic, all glazed in amber, brown, green, and cream.
Thermoluminescent test conducted 16 December, 1971 confirms the sample material to have been fired between 700 and 1300 years ago. (This result is consistent with the suggested age of the Lokapala). A copy of the report, prepared by Stuart Fleming at the Research Laboratory for Archeology and the History of Art at Oxford University, Oxford, UK.
