Roberta Blair attended Black Mountain College during the first Summer Art Institute which was held July 16-September 15, 1944. Black Mountain College was an experimental school located in Black Mountain, N.C. Established in 1933 by John A. Rice and others, the purpose of the college was to educate the whole person, with an emphasis on the role of the arts and creative thinking. Her photographs reflect her experiments at the college and her friendships developing. Her photograph of Josef Albers and Jose de Creeft with students, included in this archive, was published in BLACK MOUNTAIN COLLEGE: SPROUTED SEEDS.
