Conrad Wise Chapman was one of the 19th century's more colorful, talented and prolific American painters. In 1861 he left his studies in Rome to join the Confederate Army in his native Virginia. He served through the entire war and, indeed, fled to Mexico in 1865 rather than surrender. He is best known for his documentary paintings of Charleston's defenses. After the war he produced landscapes and genre scenes while living variously in Mexico and Europe.

Age toning; a few scattered stains; not examined out of the frames.
