New York or Philadelphia, circa 1790-1800, each with reeded urn raised on a plinth engraved with a petaled flower head above an obelisk style column engraved with ascending bellflowers and additionally, on the front panel, with a shield, over a rectangular plinth engraved on the front with urn and weeping willow, the spurred arched legs terminate in ball and claw feet.

Finely engraved decoration is present on three sides throughout. The urn and willow mourning motif appeared on many objects as a response to the 1799 death of George Washington. Related andirons are illustrated in Schiffer, The Brass Book, page 64 and American Antiques from the Israel Sack Collection (Vol. 3, p.768). A pair of andirons in the White House collection, marked "Whittingham N. York" have the same zigzag and dot pattern on the pedestals and the same cuts on the lower front edge of the base plinth.
