Chinese Pair of Qianjiang Vases Mounted as Lamps

20th century, polychrome on porcelain, vases mounted as lamps and fixed to carved wooden bases, one is decorated with the immortal Ma Gu riding a deer and holding the peach of longevity attended by a maiden carrying her usual attribute of flowers, the other vase with a decoration of court ladies engaged in the traditional noble leisure arts, on the reverse of both lamps are calligraphy verses, one with a red seal at the end of the verse, vases depicting Ma Gu were traditionally given as a gift to express wishes for longevity, note the decoration and calligraphy on the two vases are slightly different in style and suggest they are a matched pair not by the same hand, with silk lamp shades.

There is gilding loss to handles on both; the metal lamp top mount show some wear and minor loss; some minor enamel loss and some firing flaws; some repair to handles and around mouth of vase where attached to mount; polychrome colors remain clear and in good condition for the age.
