Historic Annie Oakley Photograph by D. F. Barry
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Circa 1890, this large studio portrait of the legendary sharpshooter carries Barry's blindstamp in its lower right corner along with pasted down type also crediting the photographer. To the lower left is "Annie Oakley" penned in white ink, likely by her enterprising husband and manager, Frank Butler. The image is presented in a period veneered wooden frame, the back of which carries a D. F. Barry label giving his Superior, Wisconsin address. To the right of the label is a faded pencil-inscribed "Annie Oakley" that is probably her autograph as it is similar to her known signatures.

SS 18.25 x 9 5/8 in.; DOA 22.25 x 13.25 in.

This rare image by a celebrated photographer shows Annie wearing some of her shooting medals and her wedding ring. The backdrop may be seen in some other surviving portraits from the same session.

Four areas of insect damage to the photograph's left edge not affecting the subject; some minor discoloration from exposure to sunlight.
