A Large Japanese Meiji Period Bronze Censer

Meiji period (1868-1912), marked inside of the censer "Imperial Japan, Made by Yoshida, Kyoto," overall decorated primarily with birds carved in high relief among other auspicious motifs, the lid has a small mountain on it with birds perched regally, the side handles are pine tree branches each with a bird with wings spread (both removable), the bottom of the censer is held up by four mystical beasts, their tongues forming the legs of the censer, the base has a lobed design with overall Chinese archaic geometric design, medallions with birds in flight grace the sides.


HOA 36 in.

Good to Fair condition; large bird on top has broken from its base on the mountain and the wing has been repaired, some scratches to the sides of the censer's base and around rim, wear normal with age.
