Edo period (1615-1868), ink and colors on paper, signed on lower left hand side with red artist seal, laid down, framed under glass, depicts the old folk tale about a group of monkeys who tried to capture the moon, when at last they touched the moon, it vanished in the ripples of the water, this instructive tale reminds us that what we strive to achieve may in fact be an illusion,

Good to fair condition, darkening of paper where exposed in previous frame, tears, repairs, rubbing and areas of loss throughout; painting of monkeys remains untainted and excellent.
