Kawai Gyokudo was one of the most significant painters in Japan during the 20th century working in the Nihonga style. His popularity as an artist is evidenced by the Gyokudo Museum in Tokyo, a museum devoted to paintings by the artist. This painting on offer was purchased by the owner in Japan during Gyokudo's lifetime, perhaps from the artist himself, and has not been displayed.
