New York Herald doubled as a Union spy while reporting from the South. His exploits landed Richardson in several Southern prisons, among them the notorious pen in Salisbury, North Carolina. He escaped the prison, making his way to Union lines and literally living to tell the tale.
Boards worn with front cover disbound; internally some stains.
