By Order of the Surgeon General (Richmond: Ayres & Wade, 1863), 297 pages plus 30 plates illustrating procedures, octavo, marbled paper wraps with linen spine. The front free endpaper is pencil inscribed "Presented to Lieut. W. M. McNeill by B. W. Sparks Surg. of 3d NC Cavalry Camp near Petersburg, Va Aug. 13th 1864." Protected within a custom slipcase, Parrish & Willingham 1984.

Property from the Collection of Dr. & Mrs. Gimesh, Fayetteville, NC

The recipient of this rare book served in Co. "D" of the 3rd NC Cavalry and hailed from Harnett County, North Carolina. Surgeon Sparks, the giftor, was a native of Georgia.

Loss to linen on the spine; however, binding is intact; expected age toning.
