Born in South Carolina, Elise Speights moved to North Carolina after WWII. She joined the avant-garde art scene in Raleigh during the 1950s and 1960s and studied at the Ferrer School. She studied under Joe Cox, traveling with him and other artists to paint in Oriental, NC. Her first exhibit was held at the NC Museum of Art in 1962, she later showed at the Gibbes in Charleston, SC, the Mint Museum in Charlotte, NC, and two exhibitions in New York including the Manufacturers Hanover Trust, Madison Ave., New York, NY among many other shows and accolades she received during her career.
