Davis, a self-taught painter, briefly operated a gallery in New York City. In 1872 he returned to his Long Island home and concentrated on rural scenes, landscapes and seascapes.

Surface grime and some yellowing to varnish; 3/4 inch abrasion to sky above boat; no evidence of touch-ups visible under black light inspection; frame with later gold paint.
