Elongated cylindrical form with two applied hollow-cast handles, the neck with wide die-rolled decorative border featuring flowers and palms, one side of the body with acid etched scene of six Clydesdales before a ring and under a swag of holly, the verso inscribed "American Horse Show Assn. of Chicago / Special Prize Offered by / Breeder's Gazette / Awarded to R. B. Ogilvie / To three best animals Under three Years of age produce of same / Sire out of different dam's / 1889," with Gorham hallmarks and Spaulding & Co. retailer's mark.

This prize vase was awarded by the American Horse Show Association of Chicago to Robert Burns Ogilvie of Madison, Wisconsin for his Clydesdale sire MacQueen's get of three yearlings - MacHappy, Lass o'Gowrie, and Lass o'Gowrie III. Mr. Ogilvie (1851-1923) was a successful merchant in Madison, but gained his greatest success as a breeder of champion Clydesdales at Blairgowrie, champion of agricultural schools and training, and co-founder of the Saddle and Sirloin Club at the Chicago Stock Yards.

Accompanied by a letter from Samuel Hough, proprietor of The Owl at the Bridge in Cranston, Rhode Island and an expert on Gorham sterling, indicates that this vase was a special order made for the retailer Phelps & Miller. Mr. Hough's research also uncovered that 22 hours were spent to make the vase and then 11 hours to engrave the decoration.
