Oil on canvas (lined), unsigned, featuring the ship "Rob Roy" in the foreground followed by a fleet of ships flying the Merchant Navy Ensign, inscribed on the verso "View of the city of Calcutta / on the Ganges in India / Hoogly / C. Durand / By Ship Clarendon / from China / June 1842 / Brought by the Supercargo R. P. Dana / for C. Durand" and "Imported by Goodhue May / to Canton / 1842," also inscribed "Frame and picture of / Chinese production;" presented in the original mahogany frame.

By descent through the family of Calvin Durand (CT, 1802-1884) Mr. Durand was a clerk and, later, partner in the commission house of Goodhue & Company, New York City, NY.
New stretchers, allover craquelure; some re-touch and extensive infill to craquelure visible under black light inspection (professionally restored and conserved circa 1974); some tight cracks to frame.
