Estate of Dr. James Gavin Field, Jr. of Windsor Hill Farm in Gordonsville, Virginia James Gavin Field, Jr. (1862-1927) was born in Windsor, Virginia, the fifth son of General James Gavin Field and Frances Etta Cowherd. He was educated at Richmond College and the Virginia Medical College, graduating in April 1885. After a brief stint as a physician at the City Alms House Hospital in Richmond, he served as a commissioned assistant surgeon in the US Navy medical corps from 1887 until his retirement in 1893. After retiring from the Navy, he practiced medicine in Denver, Colorado. He was ordered back into service with the Navy during the Spanish-American War. After the war he returned to Denver, but passed away in Washington, D.C. and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Dr. Field's family home was Windsor Hill Farm. A classic Greek Revival home built circa 1848, the plantation is now part of the Southwest Mountain Rural Historic District.
