(Japanese-American, 1905-1990) of solid walnut, bowed backs, turned legs and spindles, woven grass seat, pegged construction. Unsigned, pencil maker's number "463" on five chairs: "263" on one chair.

Purchased in the 1960s and the mid 1970s directly from George Nakashima, the furnishings were a prized possession and the centerpiece for many family dinners and festive occasions. Still in production, these chairs are among the artist's earliest designs and made their debut in the 1940s. They exemplify structural honesty held to a high standard of craftsmanship.
