"The United States Senate, A. D. 1850," after P. F. Rothermel, published by Butler & Long, Philadelphia, 1855, possibly hand colored, with "Proof" and "Painted by J. M. Butler" in lower margin. Presented in a period gilt and composition wooden frame. This scene, one of the more famous in American legislative history, shows Senator Henry Clay of Kentucky proposing his Compromise of 1850 in hopes of stemming the increasingly bitter antagonism between North and South.
