Late19th century after a war date photograph, oil on canvas, unsigned, on its original stretcher presented in a pierced gilt and composition period frame. This imposing and singularly fine likeness of the beloved Southern general was taken from a wartime photograph originally sold by the Richmond studio of Minnis & Cowell. A later carte de visite of this image was extensively marketed by E. & H. T. Anthony of New York after the Civil War.

Private Collection from a 40 year collector and dealer in New Bern, North Carolina Purchased from Lawrence Stith who acquired the picture from his friend, proprietor of the Queen Anne hotel in New Bern (originally the Blade House). A postcard from the hotel shows a photograph of the painting hanging in one of the parlors as early as 1930.
