19th century U.S. Mint American Art Union Medals
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
The complete set of (3) 64mm high relief bronze medals designed by Peter Paul Duggan to honor great American artists of the day. Presented in their original velvet lined cases, the dated medals' obverse subjects include Washington Allston (1847), Gilbert Stuart (1848) and John Trumbull (1849). The reverse, common to all, shows a classical personification of the American Art Union bestowing a laurel wreath upon a deserving recipient.

The medals enjoy deep, natural bronze patinas. Each piece has several small dings and toned scratches from handling. (2) of the (3) cases have detached lids that are easily repaired.
