Autograph Letter Signed ÒD. L. Cogdell,Ó two pages, 8vo, Fort Holmes (NC), April 31, 1864, to Lydia Blake, Fayetteville, NC. With postal cover made from floral wallpaper and carrying a CSA #12 tied by a Wilmington, NC cds. The letter reads in part :ÕÉI am here on this lonely dreary IslandÉbut still I had rather be here than at Northern VA. I live in hopes that this cruel war will close by the coming winterÉI wrote to you if you could make Frank a hat out of Palmetto and if you could I would send you someÉÓ Enclosed with the letter are two twisted braids of palmetto. Overall fine condition. (The ÒdrearyÓ island Cogdell refers to is Bald Head Island, today one of North CarolinaÕs most exclusive ocean resort communities.) Included is an empty and stampless wallpaper cover also from the Blake correspondence. Poor condition.
