Percussion, .577 caliber, walnut stock with three barrel bands, lockplate stamped with crown at heel and TOWER / 1862, brass nose cap, trigger guard and butt plate, proof marks on barrel. "JD" carved on the left side of the butt; "JADs" is carved on the right side of the butt.

The British Enfield was the most popular imported long arm of the American Civil War. This weapon undoubtedly saw Southern usage since it comes directly from an old North Carolina family with strong ties to the Confederacy.

Missing ramrod; the brass elements have been cleaned; pitting to the barrel; some light rusting; a substantial age crack to the butt and a smaller one behind the lockplate.
