Whiting "Ivory" Pattern Sterling Server
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Shaped bowl with acanthus scrolls connecting to a "whale tail" carved ivory handle, gold wash to bowl, marked "(Whiting hallmark) / Sterling / 2888." This pattern (#2888) is believed to be designed by Charles Osborne in 1890. In 1893 an official French government report on silversmithing in the United States described this pattern as having "an air of originality and richness" (see Charles Venable, Silver in America, 1840-1940: A Century of Splendor. Dallas: Dallas Museum of Art, 1994. p.153). Detailed articles by William Hood Jr., M.D., Richard Kurtzman, John Olson, M.D., and Charles Curb, Ph.D. on this pattern can be found in both the Jan/Feb 2001 and Jan/Feb 2006 issues of "Silver Magazine."
