Inscribed to William B. Shepard from a George Patterson with a May 24, 1870 date. Confederate rosters for NC contain men having these names.

Pettrigrew, a native of North Carolina, was legendary for his academic prowess at UNC before becoming an accomplished soldier. Pettigrew survived Gettysburg only to be mortally wounded during Lee's retreat from Pennsylvania.

Spine somewhat loose, internal foxing, light wear to covers. Overall good condition.
