Two Vintage Alligator Suitcases by Hartmann
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Mid 20th century, both pieces with dark alligator hide exteriors, divided pink satin interiors and custom fitted canvas covers. Individual characteristics are as follows: The first suitcase carries the initials "M. L. D." and has a brass maker's plate declaring that it is "Custom Built" (24.5 x 18 x 8.5 in.) (Wear to the handle; a few insignificant scuffs; internally clean and sound); the second suitcase has neither maker's plate nor initials, though it matches its mate in overall appearance (29 x 19 x 9 in.) (Exterior wear; light internal stains to fabric edges).

Hartman has a long-standing tradition of being one of the finest American manufacturers of luggage. The Hartman tradition began in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1877 to provide travelers with luxurious handmade traveling cases. These alligator cases were considered a "Must" for the fashion conscious.

The smaller cover has snap closures with tears especially at corners; the larger cover has zipper closure one side broken.
