Celebrated George Washington Lifetime Mezzotint by Valentine Green
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
General Washington after John Trumbull's original painting of the previous year, this engraving was published in London, June 15, 1781 and shows the increasingly confident American commander posing before his grazing horse and its turbaned groom; in the margin below is the Washington armorial shield being cradled by an American Indian. Presented behind a mat in a mid-20th century wooden frame.

SS 25 x 16 3/8 in.; DOA 31.5 x 22 7/8 in.

An exceptionally strong Revolutionary era strike of an engraving that rarely comes to market. It is curious to note that the English were producing such heroic images of Washington while the war for American independence was still raging.

The engraving is laid to old cardboard and is glued to its mat; a 1.5 in. vertical hairline tear extends from just above the "H" in Washington into the mat, which is chipped where it meets the frame.
