Lawrence Sully, older brother of artist Thomas Sully, moved to Richmond, Virginia in 1792, where "he advertised in the Virginia Gazette as a 'Miniature Painter (and Student of the Royal Academy).'" His sitters were primarily from Norfolk and Petersburg, Virginia, and Philadelphia.
