Two Dragon Temple Sculptures
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Vietnam or Thailand, 19th century, clay with green, blue, white and yellow glazes, very expressive facial features with bulging eyes and bared teeth, the arched body is decorated with layered scales finely glazed and a tail that rises at the end into the air, the two dragons may have graced the top central portion of a temple roof facing each other as noble dragons luring prosperity to the temple, or they may have decorated the corners of the temple roof.

11 x 26 in. (largest)

Both dragons have multiple losses, in particular loss of their whiskers and portions of their claws; the larger dragon's lower body is more weathered than its companion with loss and pitting to the glaze and rougher appearance.
