19th century, with a brownish-red Chinese export wax seal on the side, the black rectangular form box cover is hand painted landscape decoration of a bird and peony blossom on one side and Cai Shen, the God of Wealth, sitting on a throne holding a ruyi in an outdoor terrace surrounded by attendants on the other, raised on a highly decorative gilded base with mythical foo lions as the four feet, the interior when outer box is removed reveals a raised red surface with eight indentions over paneled sides with carved scenes decorated in gilding and red lacquer.

Purchased in China in 1979.

Overall very good condition for age; with some losses and wear and possible repainting on the corner edges of the cover; on interior and base there has been some wear and loss and possible repainting especially on edges; two gilded scroll panels formally attached to two corners have been lost.
