A 20th century note with the image identifies the subject as William E. Taylor, Co. "E," 6th New Hampshire Volunteers. Taylor enlisted on March 12, 1864, was wounded at Petersburg and mustered out of the service on July 17, 1865. The image is presented behind an 1840s mat in a half case.
