Featuring a swing handle, peg closure, floral basket plaque to the lid, the lid interior with a plaque decorated with the former owner's initials, the wooden base is signed "Made by Michael Kane" and dated 1995.

The origin of the lightship basket stems from the construction of the Nantucket South Shoal Lighthouse anchored off the coast of Nantucket. The monitoring task was important but monotonous and the crew took up basket weaving to pass the time--hence the moniker.
