Two Tintypes of an Identified Pennsylvania Volunteer
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Both images in full cases with patriotic brass mats, consisting of a gem tintype within a paper mat inscribed"Pvt. Henry Groatman Co C 96th Regt. Pa. Vol. Inft." and a sixth-plate tintype of the same soldier likely taken from the same sitting. The smaller photo shares its case with a period paper print showing a small child in a miniature zouave uniform.

Private Groatman, a resident of Schuylkill County, enlisted on September 23, 1861 for three years. During his term of service, the 96th Pennsylvania was heavily engaged in all of the Army of the Potomac's major campaigns from the Peninsula to Petersburg. Amazingly, Groatman survived the slaughter to muster out on October 21, 1864.

Overall very good condition.
