19th century, black ground thangka, depicted in vivid detail is the Tibetan Buddhist protector deity, Mahakala, he holds a skull cup in his principle hands and weapons in his two secondary hands, his ferocious face with bared fangs and bulging eyes is surmounted by a skull tiara, he wears a garland of heads, he is clad in tiger skins and snakes around his lower body, seated upon a lotus blossom throne backed by a flaming aureole, multiple Buddhist deities surround Mahakala amidst swirls of golden clouds, framed under glass, not examined outside of frame.

DOA: 51.25 x 38 in.

Excellent condition; very minor loss to pigments.
