As one of the founders of the Charleston Renaissance, Alfred Hutty helped initiate a cultural revival in the early 20th century after the city's lull in progress following the Civil War. St. Philip's Church was built in 1835-36, and St. Phillip's is the oldest religious congregation in South Carolina, founded in 1681. Hutty's love for Charleston is expressed by these famous words he cabled to his wife upon his first visit: "Come quickly. Have found heaven."
