Lê Phổ was among the first generation of Vietnamese artists to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Hanoi under the direct tutelage of Victor Tardieu and Joseph Inguimberty. In 1932 he earned a scholarship to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris for two years. He returned to Hanoi and accepted a professorship at the École des Beaux-Arts, but was sent to Paris in 1937 as a delegate and jurist for the International Exposition. He remained in Paris and became a citizen of France.

Lê Phổ is one of the most celebrated Vietnamese artists of the 20th century. His elegant and bright post-impressionist paintings of flowers, women, and children are found in museums and private collections throughout the world.
