Lot 4001
Extremely Rare Raleigh, NC "Sixteenth of a Dollar" 6 1/4¢ Note
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Uniface with blank reverse, printed by Murray, Draper, Fairman & Co., issued on December 2, 1817 in accordance with the state's Treasury Act of 1816, the obverse illustrated with a vignette of three men in a small boat. This note's seemingly odd denomination is derived from the Spanish monetary system based on the 8 reales piece, a silver dollar-sized coin divisible by eight and fractions thereof.

This note surfaced in a piece of antique furniture from a Wilmington, NC estate

No auction or retail comps, past or present, seem to be available for this particular note, however a heavily circulated 10¢ note from the same series was sold by Heritage Auctions in 2015 for over $800. Its catalogue description estimated that 2-4 such 10¢ notes were known. All indications are that our note is just as rare.

Areas of edge loss; two small rectangles on the reverse where the note has been taped to a mat; overall good condition and highly unlikely to be improved upon!
