Mark of John Egan, Dublin (1819) hallmarks, rectangular form with grapevine cast and applied border to hinged cover, with finely executed presentation engraving reading "Presented to / Sergt. Major Stephen Varley / by Lieutenant Thomas Molyneux / As a just tribute of acknowledgement / for the valuable assistance afforded by him to the Donor, in the execution of the / Duties of Adjutant / 2nd July 1819" and incorporating the mottos and insignia of the 77th Regiment and the Prince of Wales' plumes.

Keith and Caroline Gray were passionate about antiques, art, and history. Together they attended antique shows and auctions for decades – assembling a collection particularly strong on American coin silver, Asian art, historical documents, early images, and English ceramics. Both were longtime supporters of the Mint Museum in Charlotte, with Caroline serving in multiple capacities from docent to a member of the acquisitions board and trustee. Caroline translated her love of material culture into a successful career, becoming a certified property appraiser in Charlotte.
