Very Rare 1864 Custer's Third Cavalry Division Medallion

White metal, 36mm plus integral suspension loop, the obverse showing Major General George Armstrong Custer's bust within a wreath; the reverse reads, "The history of this war when truthfully written, will contain no brighter page than that upon which is recorded the chivalrous deeds, the glorious triumphs of the soldiers of the Third Division / Cedar Creek 19. Oct. 1864. G. A. Custer." Scratches in fields, else AU with residual luster.

These commemorative medallions were privately struck in New York for those men and officers who had served under Custer in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. A very few specimens survive, some in silver and some in white metal. Both varieties rarely appear on the market.
